Epic VFX Breakdowns from the Rebelway FX Challenge

The VFX Challenge has ended! Take a look at this awesome VFX Breakdowns from the Rebelway FX Challenge entries!

We thought it would be fun to create a post and share some of the breakdowns of some entries from the challenge.

1. Wreak Havoc - John Fanny - WINNER of the Challenge

John is the winner of the Rebelway FX Challenge with his entry ‘Wreak Havoc’. For his project, he used a wide variety of effects, from rigid bodies to FLIP and Pyro simulations to procedural animation. He shared a lot of work in progress posts and videos of how he created the FX for this challenge.

2. Green Power - Daniel Miralles Álvarez - Finalist

This was Daniel’s first VFX contest. Here you can see the magical FX that our hero summons and traps the monster with the roots.

3. Lava monster - Daniel Ha - Runner Up

Daniel’s entry has been awarded as a Runner Up of these Challenge. For the challenge, Daniel has created a lava monster fight with Iceman which gave him opportunity to create cool freeze FX with Hot Lava. The VFX Breakdown is included in the video.

4. Project 46 Chaos Enceladus - Esala Lakpathirana

Esala got the inspiration for his shield effect from Scarlet Witch’s Red Magical Power and Tony’s Mark 85 Shield. The entry took over 350 hrs of rendering time.

5. Recon - Steve Green - Highly Commended

Steve’s entry has received a Highly Commended award. His entry includes FX of particle effects, electricity, beam weapon, snow and pyro damage. He created a walkthrough video where he shows all the final effects and how they were created.

6. Rebelway FX Challenge - Mearg Taddese - Finalist

Mearg is a self-taught FX Artist from Ethiopia. For his entry, he was inspired by VFX from movies like Doctor Strange, MIB international, Invasion (Attraction 2) and WandaVision. In this breakdown, he shows the FX for the attack. He rendered each element separately and then layer them back together in Nuke.
