COURSE BREAKDOWN
The most overlooked skill to hone as a CG and FX artist is compositing. With it, you can take a plain-looking raw FX pass and make it shine! That's where the power of Nuke comes into play...
Nuke is the industry-standard compositing program and is (in our opinion) the best tool on the market.
In this course, we'll show you how to use Nuke from the ground up. You don’t need any experience prior to this class as we will cover the basics starting in week 1.
Week by week we will build our knowledge of Nuke as the shots increase in complexity and variety.
In the final weeks, we will be compositing several fully CG shots! This is your opportunity to composite ground-breaking FX.
WEEK 1 - COMPOSITING BASICS
This week, we’re going to kick things off with the compositing basics.
WEEK 2 - SCREEN REPLACEMENT
In this week, we’re going to work on keying and screen replacements inside Nuke.
WEEK 3 - GREEN SCREEN
This week, we are going to work with a character green screen shot and take a deep-dive into advanced keying techniques.
WEEK 4 - KEYING TECHNIQUES
This week, we are going to work with a character green screen shot and take a deep-dive into advanced keying techniques.
WEEK 5 - 3D COMPOSITING
This week, we'll take a look at combining digital 3D assets together inside Nuke. This will show you how to comp 100% digital assets
WEEK 6 - WORKFLOWS
This week will unlock new challenges including atmospheres, optical FX, workflows with proxies, ray renders, and gizmo hacking.
WEEK 7 - SHOCKWAVES
This week, we’re back to our scene to spice things up with some glitch, shockwaves, and more.
WEEK 8 - SPACESHIP CRASH
In this week, we’re going to create the iconic crashed spaceship scene from our course.

This course will require 5-10 hours a week with 40-80 total hours of active learning and practice by the end of the course.
Your exact time commitment per week will vary based on the topic, assignment, and personal learning style. We strongly recommend dedicating time each week to learn and practice. If you ever fall behind, don’t worry, you will have lifetime access to the lessons.

If you are a beginner or new to VFX, we recommend taking our Houdini Fundamentals course.
If you are already familiar with Houdini, we recommend taking Introduction to Houdini for FX. This course is designed to be an overview of the essential techniques required to work on realistic FX in a modern studio pipeline. By the end of this course, you will have an intermediate level of Houdini knowledge.
If you are an experienced Houdini Artist, or if you already have an intermediate-level knowledge of the software, you can pick and choose any course on the site. Most of our courses are designed to give you specific skills required for different VFX projects (Water, Magic, etc.). So feel free to pick and choose as it makes sense for you.

A typical course will take anywhere from 5-10 hours a week to watch and practice, so depending on your schedule you can determine if it is feasible for you to take multiple courses at once.
Also, you will have lifetime access to the course lessons. So if you decide that the course becomes too much to follow, you can always follow along at your own pace if you fall behind.
